Daniel Hughes, artist

Daniel Hughes is a figurative painter working in the classical tradition, with a focus on portraiture and the human form. Based in Ireland, he paints from direct observation, drawing on the techniques of the Old Masters to explore light, tone, and the inner life of his subjects.

His practice is rooted in the grisaille method — building form through layers of grey before introducing colour — a discipline that demands close attention to value and structure. Each painting begins with sustained looking, and the slow accumulation of marks that follows is as much an act of contemplation as of craft.

I am interested in what a face holds: the weight of time, the quality of attention, the things that resist easy description. Painting is a way of staying with that difficulty.
